A quick photo of the upgraded APANA machines.
From the Left: Cray (majordomo server; 6×86/180 + 64MB RAM), Kildall (newsserver, secondary webserver; PII/233 + 128MB + 10GB HD), Bombadil (central PII/233 + 64MB), Giles (dial-in modem and mail server; wasn’t upgraded– although it did get a protective cover :-), and Niggle (firewall; wasn’t upgraded)
On Monday morning a cracker goto into Bombadil (via a exploit to the very very old ssh daemon improperly installed by a previous admin; thanks muchly for not using the packaging system that would’ve kept it up to date, ‘tard!), and during the system software clean-up cas and I took the opportunity to upgrade most of the machines with hardware that had been prepared earlier.
The machine hosting this site is now probably as fast as it should be… Well, at least it’s not taking 7-15 seconds to render pages anymore. :-)
